Long term access to vaccination across Europe - How to improve our vaccine ecosystem in Europe?

The aim of this session is to gather different perspectives, including those of public health
experts, healthcare professionals, academics and the public sector, on how to best ensure
sustainable access to vaccination. Since 2014, the EU and Member States have strengthened
their cooperation against Vaccine Preventable Diseases, with the launch of the Joint Action on
Vaccination (JA-03-2017) and ultimately their proposal for a Council Recommendation.

Improving coverage rates is a central objective, which underlines multi-factorial efforts and
strong connectivity from the whole ecosystem of stakeholders involved in vaccination. As an
example, the relationship between the procurement model and sustainability of vaccination
programmes and public health has received little attention. Given the commitment of European
countries that have to strengthen their immunisation programmes, it is important to consider
whether current vaccines procurement/purchasing models have implications for public health
outcomes at the population level.

Panelists will share their perspectives on sustainable procurement models illustrated with
different countries’ examples. A voice will also be given to patient association activities to
sustain access to vaccination. Given Romania’s forthcoming EU Presidency, COPAC, a leading
patient organisation in Romania, will provide insight on the integral role of vaccines in the future
Presidency’s programme.

The audience will be invited to actively contribute by submitting questions and proposals during
the working session for European actions to be jointly addressed via an interactive online tool.
From their end, invited panelists will provide starting points for discussion, by delivering brief
"impulse statements” on how to improve the vaccine ecosystem in Europe and how to address
those changes.
