Plenary 3
Friday, 2 October 2026 | 12:45-14:00 | Kursaal
In an era marked by geopolitical fragmentation, emerging health threats, and growing pressure on multilateral institutions, Europe’s engagement with the World Health Organization (WHO) is both a global responsibility and a strategic investment in its own security and influence. This session will explore how a stronger, more integrated Europe can advance its interests and values through effective engagement with WHO, while helping to shape a more resilient and equitable global health architecture.
The discussion will examine why Europe should continue investing political capital in WHO and how the organisation contributes to Europe’s preparedness for future pandemics, antimicrobial resistance, climate-related health risks, and other cross-border challenges. Participants will also consider how Europe can support stronger multilateral institutions while safeguarding their legitimacy, effectiveness, and accountability in a rapidly changing international environment.
Looking ahead, the session will address the kind of global health leadership Europe seeks to exercise in an increasingly contested world. By strengthening WHO and multilateral cooperation, Europe can enhance its resilience, amplify its voice, and help deliver collective solutions to shared global challenges.
