Organised by the German National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians (KBV) as part of Germany´s Presidency of the EU Council

In partnership with the Digital Congress of the German National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians (KBV) on 1 October 2020 as part of Germany´s Presidency of the EU Council, EHFG is proud to present a stream from the Digital Congress within the EHFG 2020 programme.

The covid-19 pandemic poses an ultimate stress test not only to the European health systems in their entireties, but also to their functioning as well as to collaboration on all levels: locally, regionally, nationally and internationally. So far, throughout the European Union citizens have relied on well organised and prepared structures to counteract the detrimental effects of the pandemic. However, at the same time shortcomings call for joint efforts in order to improve crisis response not only within the European Union but beyond, for instance regarding shortages of personal protective equipment. After years of refocussing efforts on the national rather than the international level and of loosening collaborative efforts it appears of utmost importance to strengthen international collaboration and coordination yet again. Aspiring at making the European voice heard, it is up for discussion whether the scope and the ambition of the European Union matches with the challenges of a global pandemic. A pandemic, of which outcomes in economy and health create risks of unprecedented dimensions.

The aim of this panel therefore is to focus on the role and the effects of international crisis response in times of COVID-19.

Panellists:
Andreas Gassen, Chairman of the Board, German National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians
Josep Figueras, Director, European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies
Ilkka Salmi, Director Disaster Preparedness and Prevention, Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations, European Commission
Tankred Stöbe, Médecins Sans Frontières
