mHealth. Health at your fingertips

Thursday, 03.10.2013 | 14:30 - 17:30

Organised by DG CONNECT of the European Commission

Users' viewpoint

This parallel session will look at the recent developments and challenges in the area of mobile health ('mHealth'). The increasing penetration of smartphones, as well as the 3g and 4g networks, provides a significant boost to the use of mobile platforms for providing healthcare services.

Use of mobile technology for health and healthcare/social care has tremendous potential for patient engagement and improved clinical care. mHealth has already shown to be successful and cost-effective both when using applications assisting individuals in their own health and wellness management as well as when using mobile apps targeted at healthcare providers as tools to improve and facilitate the delivery of care. However, there is a lack of awareness of added value and benefits of mHealth. also, to achieve wider evidence-based mHealth deployment more data should be made available on the efficacy and costeffectiveness of these solutions. Furthermore, guidance with respect to the application of regulation in the area of mHealth is needed, in order to protect privacy and security, standards and interoperability. Such guidance helps to ensure that the potential of mHealth with respect to the health sector, but also growth, jobs and trade, is realised.

This parallel forum will explore mHealth opportunities and challenges from multiple perspectives:
• The end-user perspective – citizens and patients experience and expectations
• Healthcare professional perspective: existing evidence on the benefits of mHealth – health impacts and cost effectiveness
• Researchers' perspective – challenges and opportunities
• Industry perspective – recent and possible future market developments
• Policy maker perspective – regulatory issues related to mHealth
